
According to current data, south-east Asian countries as well as China have increased agricultural imports by 65% between 2000 and 2005 with a result of US$ 87 billion. Imports in these countries have also increased during the same period to US$ 77,7 billion.
China and the Philippines have already presented a deficit trade balance but countries such as India and Thailand are increasingly importsrather than exporting goods. Researchers believe that in a few years these countries will also become major importers of agricultural products.
